Maria Serrano, an internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer from Seville, Spain, joins Maria Osende on stage for two nights of flamenco passion and power.

Maria Serrano

Dancer

Maria Serrano, nick named the “Voodoo Queen” of flamenco, was born in Seville (Spain). From her earliest childhood on she was taught flamenco by Seville’s best and most famous flamenco teachers. Early on, her sensitivity and power were recognised.

 

Soon after she travelled half the world with famous ensembles such as Meme Menjibar, Javier Barón, Carmen y Carmelilla Montoya, Antonio “El Pipa”.

 

In 2000 she founded her own company: “Compañia Maria Serrano” and presented in her home town of Seville, “RITMO Flamenco-Cubano” with Choreographer and good friend, Manolo Marin, one of the most renowned in his field.

 

In 2014 Maria Serrano expanded her teachings into Canada with the launch of her 3rd studio this time in Toronto with the launch of “Flamenco dance academy Maria Serrano.”

 

In 2015 saw Maria Serrano return to the recording studio to record her third Album entitled “Flamenco por Derecho”. The album was received with positive reviews and a subsequent European tour followed that same year.

 

In 2017 Maria Serrano’s new production “MEMORIAS” is in production and ready to tour starting fall of 2017 and will be touring through 2018 world wide.

 

Maria Serrano has toured and continues to tour in countries around the world.

Maria Osende

Dancer
Madrid, Spain/ Halifax, Canada

 

Maria Osende is a multi-disciplinary dancer, teacher, choreographer, producer and presenter whose work is rooted in flamenco, although her background includes ballet and contemporary dance.

 

Maria works as an independent dance artists, and is also the artistic director of her dance company Maria Osende Flamenco Co. and school in Halifax, as well as the presenter and producer of Halifax’s Atlantic Flamenco Festival. Maria previously danced as a soloist with the Berlin Ballet (Germany) and the National Ballet of Spain (Madrid). In 2015 Maria received the prestigious Established Artist Recognition Award from Arts Nova Scotia.

Daniel MacNeil

Guitarist

Daniel is a multi-discipline instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and educator based in Halifax with an extremely diverse background including flamenco, middle eastern, Indian, western classical, and many other styles of “world music”, with renowned musicians across the world.

 

He is the founder, and director of Halifax’s premiere Middle Eastern chamber ensemble Nafas, and is faculty at Dalhousie University.  Daniel has studied flamenco intensively with world class artists in Spain both at the renowned flamenco school of dance and music Amor De Dios, as well as privately.

 

As a composer, and performing guitarist, some achievements include composition, arranging, and performance with Symphony Orchestras in the flamenco genre, all with rave reveiws.  Daniel began working with Maria Osende upon her arrival in Halifax in 2005, and together they continually strive to create, and present new flamenco works.

Joyce Saunders

Vocals
Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

A Halifax based singer-songwriter and back-up vocalist for various groups. Her original songs, recorded on two albums, are rich tapestries of relationship, landscape, and spirit.
Joyce started singing flamenco in 2010 as she brings a seasoned and powerful voice to her flamenco performances. In the winter of 2017, she spent two months studying flamenco singing at the renown “Christina Heeren Foundation” in Seville, Spain.

 

She is back in Halifax with her new approach and deep knowledge on flamenco singing. In her flamenco masterclass, she’ll teach the mysterious secrets and techniques of flamenco singing to anyone interested.
